Modified Atmosphere Packaging

Product Type: Fresh Horticultural Products
Stage:Distribution & Marketing
Problem: After more than two weeks of cold transportation, guava fruits are tend to show deterioration due to chilling injury, senescence, firmness loss, and/or pathogen decay, which significantly reduce the percentage of salability when arrival and is considered the most important factor that limiting distant marketing of guava fruits.
Solution: Modified atmosphere packaging (MAP) is a handling technique that prolongs storage life of harvested fresh produce by adjusting atmospheric compositions inside the package, which usually involving reduction of oxygen and/or elevation of carbon dioxide concentrations.  Because of retardations in terms of metabolisms and senescence, ethylene production and action, and sensitivity of environmental stress of produce as well as pathological microbial proliferations under the gas condition, the quality of the horticultural commodity is maintained better than one in ambient air; therefore, its postharvest longevity is extended.

‘Jen-Ju Bar’, also known as ‘Pearl’, guava fruits with (right) or without (left) modified atmosphere packaging stored for 28 days at 5 followed by 3 days at 20.
