Consumer Education on Freezing Unused Food

Product Type: All
Stage: Consumption
Problem: Food spoilage from lack of proper storage
Solution: Consumer outreach and education on freezing unused food ingredients to save money and reduce waste

  1. About 40% of food production in the United States is wasted along the production chain and American households waste on average $120 per month in uneaten food.
  2. Consumers most typically refrigerate food and avoid freezing due to perceptions of food degradation on freezing. As a result, over-purchased food is often wasted after spoiling in the open or in the refrigerator.
  3. Research has shown that the nutrients profiles of frozen foods are essentially equivalent to that of fresh food. Efforts at consumer education can change popular conceptions to the contrary and reduce waste at the consumption level.
