BACKGROUN

Reducing food losses and waste is an urgent issue around the world and in the Asia-Pacific region. Taking into account the major challenges that lie ahead in increasing access to food while protecting our natural resources and environment, strong cooperation and effective public-private partnerships are critical to addressing access to post-harvest technologies and to achieving sustainable development.
Fishery and livestock products are essential elements of the human diet. In the Asia- Pacific region, their production is continuously rising due to rising consumption from middle-income populations and dietary changes toward high-protein-content food types. This in effect has led to the abundance of waste or by-products, as can be seen from the frozen and canned seafood industry in the APEC region where tons of exoskeleton are discarded annually. Both commercial processing and home cooking require removal of bones, skin, head, offal, etc., which can be either sold for use in high-value health-related products or in low-value fishmeal, fertilizer, animal feed production, instead of dumping on landfills or oceans creating environmental hazards.
Since 2013, Chinese Taipei has been implementing the APEC Multi-Year Project (MYP SCE 02 2013A) on “Strengthening Public-Private Partnership to Reduce Food Losses in the Supply Chain.” This year, the focus is on fishery and livestock products and there are two major events. The first event is the “Expert Consultation on Assessment Methodology of Fishery and Livestock Losses.” The second event is the “APEC Seminar on Strengthening Public-Private Partnership to Reduce Food Losses in the Supply Chain of Fishery and Livestock.”
