Infrared Rice Cleaning

Product Type: Grains – Rice
Stage: Production & Harvesting, Handling & Storage
Problem: Infestation of rice after harvest
Solution: Infrared radiation heating for drying and pest removal

  1. Rice is typically harvested at a moisture content that is higher than required for safe storage. Harvested rice has to be dried to 12-14% wet basis moisture content for storage.
  2. Rice is normally dried using convective heated air. The process is slow because the air is kept at a relatively low temperature to avoid damaging the rice and is therefore unable to kill insects infesting harvested rice.
  3. Rice can be dried with a catalytic infrared emitter which has reduced risk of damaging rice quality compared to heated air methods in addition to heating rice to a high enough temperature to kill or destroy infestations of grain moths, grain borers, and their eggs.
