Reducing In-Transit Tilapia Mortality
Product Type: Fisheries – tilapia
Stage: Handling & Storage
Problem: Fish mortality in-transit
Solution: Instituting appropriate water temperature and oxygen level controls, implementing adequate equipment for transport vehicles
- Transfer to live fish truck: Tilapia should be weighed prior to transfer into buckets so that fish compartments and buckets hold safe amounts of fish to minimize mortality from crowding.
- Water temperature and oxygen control: Weather, road, traffic, and distance to destination affect water temperature and oxygen levels. Temperature and oxygen level are two key factors for tilapia survival in transit. Water temperature should be maintained between 20-24 degrees celcius and air pumps should be used to maintain air circulation and oxygenation of water during transportation. Adjusting for transit conditions and implementing air pumps reduce tilapia mortality in transit.
